Research Pipeline

For the 2012 RCMI Symposium, a major program session has been devoted to the issue of increasing K-12 student interest in health sciences and biomedical research. The Research Pipeline committee has put together a program for high school students and teachers that draws upon the unique resources of the RCMI community. Students will interact with leaders in health research and rotate through different activities (Career Pathways and Mentoring and hands-on science activities prepared by RCMI schools) accompanied by a near-peer mentor. The students will join also the rest of the Symposium attendees in a luncheon lecture by a national healthcare authority figure.

Students who participate are expected to have:

  1. increased knowledge of health issues and the scientific approaches being used to address them;
  2. enhanced understanding of career pathways in the health sciences and strategies for successfully navigating those pathways;
  3. improvement in professional skills in communication and critical thinking; and
  4. increased self-confidence in their own potential to succeed in a health-related career.

Mentoring Opportunitites - Career Pathways

One part of the community outreach program will be a session on Career Pathways and Mentoring for area high school students. The objectives are to:

  • increase student awareness of careers in health and biomedical science
  • identify and address student concerns regarding health careers, and
  • provide positive interactions with both near-peer mentors and individuals with established careers in the health sciences.

In order to make this possible, we are asking for volunteers from the RCMI community who represent a variety of backgrounds, careers, and career pathways. We seek researchers, clinicians, technicians, administrators, support staff, entrepreneurs, and educators to participate as mentors and share their own career pathway, their excitement, their motivation, and also some of the challenges or special situations they have faced. Such challenges or situations could include work-life balance, economic hardship, disabilities, or special issues related to being a minority.

Interested individuals will be asked to commit to meeting with a minimum of two groups of students (30 minutes total) and reply to one letter or email from review expectations and answer any questions. Further, volunteer mentors should send a brief email with their contact information indicating their interest, their career description, any special topics they are willing to share, and previous experience with high school students to plancom@rcmibiennial.org.
